Summary of Application Experience
August MCATer who completed his primary AMCAS in mid-September. I wasn't complete at most schools until early December. I got most of my rejections in January and, in a moment of frustration, applied to, and got into, Georgetown SMP as a backup in early April. I was told by my interviewers at both schools where I interviewed that I had a well written personal statement, so I am now wondering if the schools that rejected me even looked at my application beyond the numbers. Who cares, I got into a great school.
My unique path: Learned my lessons the hard way. Barely graduated from high school and failed out of college my first year. Moved from VA to CA to work. After four years of trying different things, traveling throughout Europe, and lots of soul searching, I decided that I wanted to practice medicine (insert long winded answer to 'why medicine?' here). But first, I had to start from the bottom at a local community college where I had to get honest with myself, swallow my pride, and take remedial math classes. Worked my butt off. Transferred to UCLA in '03 with a 3.92 from my CC. My AMCAS stats don't reflect the improvement I made in my soph.-senior years where I had close to a 3.9 overall and a 3.9 science gpa, (4.00, 3.80, 3.94, respectively, although you might want to check my math), while balancing ~25+ hours of ECs/work a week.
