    Summary of Application Experience

My GPA looks crappy, but I have shown a strong upward trend (which I hope schools will notice)

My BCPM is pretty low as most of my science courses were during my 1st and 2nd year (the years when I had lower marks)...oh well.

Nov 15/06 - Just submitted my UofA application. Let's see how the application cycle pans out.

Dec 24/06 - Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Still have another month of waiting to go - hoping for some interviews!!

Jan 23/07 - Well, this cycle hasn't started out that great. Checked my status on UBC and found out that I won't be getting an interview. Also, no interview at Dal. A little bit disappointed, but given that I was placed in the highly competitive OOP category, I'm not that stressed out.

Waiting to hear from my in-province schools!!

May 15/07 - Well, decision day has come and I'm happy to report some good news. I was accepted at UofA and UofC and was waitlisted at UWO. I'm still torn regarding which school to choose - they were both fantastic schools with excellent programs.

I hope people have a chance to look at this profile and realize that you don't have to give up on your dream simply because you think your GPA/MCAT aren't up to par. From the above you can see that my stats were pretty average. Medical schools and their admissions decisions are unpredictable, and nothing is a sure thing. Also, I should add that I was lucky to be an Alberta resident and qualify as an in-province applicant at two schools.

Some advice: try and make yourself seem like a well-rounded candidate. Spend time doing activities and taking classes that you are passionate about; this passion will be evident in both your application materials, as well as during the interview. Also, try and acquaint yourself with the medical profession with every opportunity you get. How better to show your desire to pursue medicine than spending time shadowing physicians, doing clinical research, and working directly with patients.

I'd be happy to provide more information/advice. Please leave a comment on this profile with your e-mail (I will not post these comments) and I will send a reply back.

Oct 21/08 - Yup, I'm still checking this profile. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment.
