    Summary of Application Experience

11/1-This is my second year applying. Retook the MCAT in August and improved my score from a 27 to a 34 (surprised me too). Decided to apply regular decision and was put on hold while awaiting my MCAT scores. Didn't get applications complete until mid to late October. Already got an interview at Mercer Med. in December. Maybe hear back from other schools next week.

12/11- Interviewed at Mercer Med on the 7th. Thought it went very well. Haven't heard from any other school. Kinda looking grim. Maybe hear something after the holidays.

1/12- Rejected by University of Tennessee, no biggie, they told me in the letter that 1000 out of state applicants fight for only 10 or 15 seats. . Called all medical schools for an update and they all gave me the 'your application is in processing' nonsense, except for Mercer Med. They told me that the admissions committee had been very 'stingy' giving out acceptances and that only half of the class was filled so far. In addition, they also said that this was not out of the ordinary and a backlog of files to be reviewed was not uncommon during this time of year. I guess I'll give all the schools another call in about 2 weeks. Will update if there is any progress.

3/14- Sorry I haven't updated. Kinda Frustrated. Interviewed at MCG, really liked the facilities and the medical school. Students seemed very friendly. Interviewers seemed to like me. Augusta is a little rough, but seems like a nice place to stay. Interviewing late, probably not much of a chance to get in.

4/1- Waitlist to Mercer med. Expected it. Mercer med is a frustrating school. If you have high academics and great extracurriculars, don't expect an acceptance on merit alone. Mercer Medical school accepts a certain mold to that school. They like church kids who are conservative and how a high probablity of working in a rural area. If they sense motives for specialization, they won't accept you. Also, getting the wrong interviewers hurt you. Watch out for Dr. Piskurich and Dr. Innes, tough interviewers.

4/20- Waitlist to MCG. Really liked the school. Interviewing at MCG dispelled alot of the bad rumors I heard about the place. Everyone was very friendly, including people who were not tour guides. There is no attendance policy to lectures and there is a student run note-taking service. Students at MCG are not ranked so there is little competition amongst classmates because no one has an idea of how anyone else is doing. They also try to give you a little clinical skills as well.

5/16- Accepted to MCG. Was at the top of the waitlist. Thank God I got in somewhere. Very long and frustrating process. My family was very relieved. Still wondering if an early application next year would yield better results. Very happy reguardless.

    SUMMARY:
You've heard it many times before, but one more time won't hurt. APPLY EARLY!!! Seems to be the key to getting in. I'm sure this will be easier with the MCAT going to all computer based administration, so that wait times for scores will be decreased. Many of my rejection letters read something like the this:

'We regret to inform you that not all interviewable applicants receive an interview'

Applying early may have gotten me an interview at some of the better schools. If a high ranking school is your goal, this is one of the keys to success.

Also, many interviewers seemed very impressed with my massive health backgroud. If you can get a job working as an orderly or tech in a healthcare setting, it will give you alot more to talk about in an interview. I always heard that there is nothing you can say that can get you into medical school, but there is alot you can say to keep you out. Remember to smile and be nonconfrontational, even if they insult you.

GOOD LUCK! I hope your premed experience runs more smoothly than mine did!
