Summary of Application Experience
Get your secondary writing boots on..... (or hats I guess) try not to grind your teeth....chewing a lot of gum seems to work for me. As for writing secondaries and personal statements - There's nothing better than audience-directed-self-reflection to make a person feel unhappy, irratiable and worthless - unless you are an egomaniacal jerk, or have some sob story. Oh, and interviews are not what you think they are going to be. No sweet mind puzzles, (ex: why is a manhole cover round?, if you have nine marbles and one weighs less, how can you tell which it is with a balance and two wieghings? - or, if you have three switches in one room and a lightbulb in the other - how can you tell which switch blah blah blah blah blah....) no interpretations of poetry, few ethical questions. Believe it or not, I was pretty psyched up for this sort of thing, but alas, just questions like 'who is your hero? what are your strenghts / weaknesses? why did you get a 'C' in a summer class six years ago? Smile at the right time, make eye contact, speak in complete sentences. Stay positive, don't be cynical. Remember, its not charm school your'e applying to. That's it. Have a good answer for why you want to be a doctor. No one asked me difficult questions, and I'm no super-genius.(Just look at my numbers) The only difficult questions were the ones which were poorly phrased by the interviewer - that is, questions that were not sufficently specific - or where the interviewer wanted you to produce complete BS. Also, don't sweat a bad interview - I had a nightmarish interview at one school and got in. Also, If you went to Bowdoin, I would be quite happy to talk to you. And remember, Susan Livesay is your best friend: there's no way I could have done it without her....
