Summary of Application Experience
I applied broadly to many MD/PhD programs as I had no geographic preference. I was invited to interview at all of them and had to pair down my interview schedule due to cost constraints. Fortunately early acceptances at Hopkins and UVA allowed me to narrow down the list with confidence. Duke, for example, lost my application (but at least they didn't give me a heart with the wrong blood type or operate on me with tools washed in hydraulic fluid - google these leads if you are considering Duke), I found this offputting so I withdrew. The only program to reject me was Harvard which I thought was bar-none the most attractive based on the resources available to student (recall this was 6 years ago). It ultimately came down to Hopkins vs. U Penn vs. Cornell-Rockefeller. I ended up choosing Hopkins, which I think was a good fit in the end although, frankly, the place certainly took some getting used to.
