Summary of Application Experience
06-05-06 payment received by AACOMAS 06-08-06 transcripts received by AACOMAS 06-26-06 application processed by AACOMAS 07-06 received 5 secondaries and sent 3 of them 10-06 interviewed scheduled for WVSOM, did not attend 11-06 interviewed at MSUCOM, later rejected 01-07 shadowed DO and sent in secondary for LECOM-Erie 01-29-07 took MCAT for second time 02-07 received interview invite for LECOM-Erie 03-07 interviewed at LECOM-Erie and accepted 04-07, 05-07 received rejection letters from OUCOM, UMDNJ-SOM, CCOM (I didn't care since I was already accepted to somewhere I would rather go).
This was my second time applying, the first time I only applied to MSUCOM (Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine) because I didn't think I had a chance with a low MCAT score (23) was waitlisted and never taken off the waitlist. I only applied to DO schools both times. The second time I really wanted to be accepted, so I decided to apply to more schools. I actually wrote my Personal Statement in one day and never had it reviewed or checked by anyone but myself.
My first choice was MSUCOM but I interviewed and was rejected, I didn't want to be too far from home so I didn't go to WVSOM interview and didn't turn in VCOM secondary. Luckily, I was able to shadow a LECOM-Erie alum and ultimately accepted to LECOM-Erie. I think shadowing an alum of a school can really help.
I would suggest if the desire to become a doctor is great that applying to many schools will definitely increase your chances to be accepted. This is because different schools weigh different aspects of the application differently. Some care more about g.p.a and MCAT (from my experience UMDNJSOM,CCOM) and some care a little less about these two and care more about volunteer experiences (in my experience MSUCOM is one of these).
Don't give up (I know everybody says this) but it is true, I even gave up but luckily LECOM-Erie gave me a chance. And also apply early, this definitely will increase the chances of being accepted. Sometimes, its only a matter of time. It doesn't always look good but sometimes it works out perfect (or almost perfect).
