I applied while abroad -- it is definitely possible to do this with careful planning (get your secondary applications in early!). I completed five interviews in August and September before my departure and then returned for the month of January to finish my interviews (I had five more interviews scheduled but ended up only doing two of them after getting an early Christmas present from Cornell). Of course, I couldn't attend any revisit weekends since I was abroad for the entire spring but as long as you're not too indecisive I think you can definitely make an informed decision about which school to attend as long as you make the best of your interview days. I would recommend spending the night with a student during interviews and just stopping random students (in all four years!) to ask if they are happy/why they chose to attend the school.
