Summary of Application Experience
OUCH DID THIS PROCESS HURT!!! I can't wait to punish myself actually learning something now.
So, I applied to the schools listed above in two different application cycles, 2 years apart from one another. Year one I applied to 9 schools, had 1 interview, and 9 rejections - 2005 entrance year. This last cycle I applied to 30 schools, had 1 interview, 1 acceptance... that is really all that matters. I got into a good school too. It is also probably the best fit I could have imagined. I had to apply mostly to private schools because I was not a resident of a state with a state school (or I would have been accepted in the first cycle - the odds of 1:4-6 as an in-state applicant are way better than 1:80-150 odds when you apply as out-of-state applicant).
I am a non-traditional student... went to college immediately after high school, and messed up my grades quite badly. I took many years off to be a pro athlete. When I went back to college I just started my college education over (as reflected in the GPA's I listed above). However, the AMCAS app includes my failures, D's and C's (I guess I can't just press 'restart' like I can with the X-box)... it ruined my appearance to the med schools as a NUMBER. With all the applicants I didn't stand out when they cut by GPA and MCAT. Okay, well, that just meant I had to be smarter about it. So, I applied to a greater number of schools to increase my odds. Luckily some schools actually READ a student's application and that is where I found my way in. You never really know what each school is looking for in its student body. I was banking on being the spice a med school added to its student body soup. I guess it worked out for me, but it never was easy.
