Summary of Application Experience
11/14 - finally took the time to figure out how to access TCOM's site, and whammo, congrats you're in. Good stuff.
11/15 - email at 12:05 from UT-Houston. Classy. UTMB before 9 AM, TAMU around... noon?
11/16 - mom checked mail, got the letter from UTSA. Feel kinda bummed I didn't hear from SW... just went to an awesome talk that made me think twice about my opinion of it.
1/10 - Well, the early admission season has come and gone, and I never heard back from SW. I have a gnawing fear that once Baylor's interview period comes to a close they will cherry pick a number of SW early acceptees, and if you didn't hear from them you won't be one of the select few. Ah well. In a way it's kind of a good thing... I'm still not sure about UTH v. SW, so it's nice to hold onto my Houston acceptance.
Texas schools are great.
My ranking:
1) Baylor - more flexible with research opportunities than SW. I like the track program: the research track seems well-defined and accesible with the opportunity to pick up an M.S. along the way, and the ethics and geriatrics tracks also caught my eye. Leagues ahead of other schools in curriculum. Nice students, although admittedly a number of them weren't my bag. Location, location, location. I'm from Houston, and it's smack dab in the middle of the TMC. Almost perfect. 2-3) UT-H & UTMB tied - UTMB is tied with A&M and Tech for the friendliest school. Someone there told me to think about which student body I'd most like to hang with for four years... I can definitely see it. Ditto UT-H. Feel like I'd do well at either and have good opportunities to research. Not in love with Galveston, but there are worse places* to spend four years. 4) UT-SA - a close fourth. Would be in contention with 2 & 3 if not for location; I respect SA but don't really want to live there. Too much class. Research is actually pretty good. 5) Texas A&M - Friendly and small. CS and Temple, though? I like S&W, but I'm sure if I'm up for the split. 6) UT-SW - I like basic science research there more than Baylor, but I got a rotten vibe from them. And lunch sucked. 7) TCOM - nice place. For a while I thought osteopaths were on to something, but further experience and contemplation leads me to question why they aren't just MDs. OMT is an expensive massage. 8) Texas Tech - *places like Lubbock. Ick. So very, very far from home. Hell, from any home I've ever known, my grandpa's included. Lubbock... ick. Give me the football team, hold the school. However, also a nice place.
