Some shadowing (one summer), some volunteering at free clinic (senior year only). My medical experience was limited to summer before senior year and senior year. I took a non-medically related job my following graduation, while taking upper level biology classes part time at my hometown university.

My letters of rec, essays, and interviews went well, but I am sure that my (relative) lack of medical experience led to me being waitlisted at so many schools.
