This process is somewhat random, but my best recommendation is to apply early (unlike myself) and be persistent with updates, inquiries, etc. In the grand scheme of things, it is largely a numbers game, but accomplishments such as research, undergraduate awards, volunteering, shadowing, etc. can only boost your application profile.
