  • Application cycles: 06/19/2013
  • Demographics: Male, 33, Caucasian
  • Home state: California
  • Brief Profile: I have decent extracurriculars including a study abroad humanitarian effort to Guatemala for 10 days to remodel a school in an impoverished area, a volunteer in an emergency room at a hospital (150 hours), involvement in the Flying Samaritans which is a group that travels to Mexico once a month to set up free health clinics, and also had a 3 months stint as a volunteer in a virology research lab at SDSU. I also worked to fund my own education and living expenses while attending college, and had a very little funding to pay for MCAT prep and the whole application process. I've worked between 20-35 hours a week while attending school to support myself since my parents could not. I've got good letters from professors who have had me and loved me, in classes I got A's in (Ochem, Physics, and Physiology). I view myself as a strong applicant who may be considered disadvantaged economically since I did work to support myself through college, my only weak point really being the MCAT. I scored 8VR, 11PS, and 10 BS; I was averaging 12 on BS on AAMC practice tests and hit 13 a couple times and thought the actual exam's bio was much more difficult. The rest of the exam was very similar and I landed the same scores as I had been (yes, even the average 8 on VR I worked months to achieve; started at about a 4).

    Summary of Application Experience

10/16/2013: So I just got my first rejection today from USC pre-interview; not a big surprise with my MCAT score but still hurts a bit not even to be interviewed. They are the first school to get back to me.
