I interviewed at a very broad range of schools. Some invites were completely unexpected, but I learned that this process is not all about the numbers. Even if your stats aren't the most competitive, clearly portraying your ideals/goals in your ECs and your personal statement (especially!) can persuade schools to give your app a second look. Schools really do consider how well you "fit" into their institution. Put time into your essays. Sincerity and insightfulness are key.
Also, APPLY BROADLY and EARLY. My primary was verified late June, and I tried to submit my secondaries within a week (two weeks max) of receiving them.
