Summary of Application Experience
I began the spring semester of my junior year fully committed to applying for medical school. I had originally planned to begin studying for the MCAT in January, but I was studying abroad in Ghana, so I could not get much studying done. Once I got back to NYC, I decided to take a Kaplan course to prepare. My class didn\'t start until March, and I spent most of February getting my recommendations ready for my committee letter. I wanted to take the MCAT in late May, but classes got in the way so I was not fully prepared by May. I still decided to sit for the test and see what it was like, but I couldn\'t take it because of an error in my name when I registered for the test. I was slightly relieved, and was able to use my free time in June to better prepare. I took the test on June 16. While I was worrying about the MCAT, I was also worried about finding something to do for the summer. I had applied to a bunch of summer programs, but did not get accepted into any until late May, when I heard back from a program at Einstein College of Medicine. After the MCAT, I worked on my AMCAS application while working at Einstein. I received my scores in late July, and finally submitted my application in early August. I applied to 31 schools. It took six weeks for my application to be verified, and I submitted my first secondaries in late September. I ended up submitting only 22 secondaries out of the 31 schools I applied to. The first school I heard back from was Hofstra, but my interview was not until January. The second school to contact me was Downstate for an interview in late November. I then heard from Einstein, New York Medical College, Yale, UMich, Columbia, UPenn, Harvard, and then Temple. By late December I was accepted into Downstate. I kept receiving interview invites until February. I had received 20 interview invites, and decided only to go to 8. I went to interviews at Downstate, Einstein, UPenn, Columbia, Yale, UMich, Harvard, and Temple. I was waitlisted at Einstein, and accepted to UMich and Temple. In March, I was accepted to Yale, rejected from Harvard and UPenn, and waitlisted at Columbia. I eventually got off the waitlist at Columbia but decided to attend Yale.
