  • Brief Profile: Nontrad, BA & MFA in English.
    Teacher (college-level, 2 semesters).
Admin for high-level exec. (2 yrs).
Medical mission volunteer in Haiti in 2008 (1 wk). No prior medical experience. Trigger for career change.

    Clinical experience:
ER volunteer (200 hrs over 9 mos).
Then, phlebotomist for blood transfusions (500 hrs over 4 mos)...
Then, ER scribe (3000 hrs over 2.5 yrs). Had EMT-B which I did not use but helped me get the job.
    Scribing overlapped with:
Edited essays for med school admissions business.
Free clinic volunteer (200 hrs over 2 yrs). Lab, pharmacy, patient history-taking.
NIH summer research (2 papers: 1 review/1 research. Review in press.)

MCAT courses (over 3 years, some scholarships):
    At comm college: Bio 1 & 2, Gen Chem 1 & 2, Calc 1, Phys 1 & 2, OChem 1 & 2, A&P 1 & 2, Biochem, Stats 1, Biomedical Ethics.
For MCAT used EK books only, no real prep course. Slightly regret this.

Courses during app cycle (almost all scholarships):
At comm college: Micro, Cell Bio, Genetics, Biostats, Med Term.
    At 4-year: Histo.
At NIH: Clinical Pharm (free course because I audited it).

    Summary of Application Experience

Submitted AMCAS on 8/20/11, verified on 9/30/11.
    Interviewed Nov through Mar.
Regular update letters (end of semester, papers).
First acceptance in early May. Rest after May 15th.
Declined/withdrew from all others after got Case acceptance.

This was such a roller coaster process. My husband deserves a ton of credit!
I also found it encouraging to see nontrads with limited financial resources succeed. Hopefully this profile will do the same.
