  • Application cycles: 06/20/2011
  • Demographics: Female, 37, Caucasian
  • Home state: Colorado
  • Last Active: 12/17/2011
  • Brief Profile: Currently: I am a wilderness first responder and EMT-Basic; I recently became certified in Advanced Wilderness Life Support, IV therapy, and EKG interpretation.

I work part-time as an EMT-Basic (Leadville, CO); part-time (full-time during the winter season) as a patient care tech on a medical / surgical floor (Frisco, CO); and contract as an Outward Bound instructor (Outward Bound Southwest, Moab, UT). When I\'m not working, I trail run, climb, hike, train a burro for pack-burro racing, raft, ski, and backpack, dependent on season. I don\'t get much free time between the three jobs, but I\'m hoping to volunteer with a few youth mentoring programs next year. And I\'m looking into teaching wilderness medicine this fall. In the past year, I\'ve shadowed anesthesiologists, pain docs, and orthopedic surgeons in the OR and during clinic / rounds. I also went Guatemala during August and September of 2010 and volunteered at a rural medical clinic, which was a very humbling experience.

Undergrad: 2 years organic chemistry research with final poster presentation at Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemistry Society, AMSA treasurer for one semester / member for 4 years, scholarship for study abroad in Northern Ireland (Queens University Belfast) for one semester, AMSA 5k Run for Doctors Without Borders race director and founder, Alabama state record holder in the marathon (2006-2010), raft guide / mountain bike guide for four seasons in Colorado. Physician shadowing in my hometown of Huntsville, Alabama, since 2006 (family / sports medicine / pediatrics).

Interests: Rural medicine, high altitude physiology, wilderness medicine.
