Most Meaningful Experience Remarks: I was fortunate to begin working in Dr. XXXX lab during my freshman year, and experience that has become a defining experience in my education that has not only exposed me to an extraordinary variety of techniques but surrounded me with other inquisitive students. My research solidified my passion for the sciences and taught me how to be inquisitive and open minded in the laboratory and in the classroom. Performing primary research and formally presenting my data allowed me to truly engage with my education, an opportunity not afforded to most undergraduates at large schools. Working in a research laboratory allowed me to hone my public speaking skills, solve real research problems on my own and to try my hand at experimental design. The biomedical aspect of the projects in my lab convinced me that I belong in the health care field. I will be completing one more year of research with Dr. XXXXX that will include 6 class credit hours of \"Honors Thesis\" and will be presenting and defending a thesis for Biology Department Honors and University Honors at Appalachian State. Most Meaningful Experience Remarks: Serving as the founding president of the Eta Chapter of Epsilon Tau Pi was, at its very core, an extraordinary lesson in the importance of patience and humility. I\'m no stranger to leadership but handling a group of eagle scouts, all leaders in their own right, was an adventure. Initially, I had an extraordinary vision for the fraternity, huge membership, large service projects and hands on involvement with local scout troops. And while all of those things are great ideas, my original plan was to make all of it happen by myself: a valiant effort that lasted all of three weeks. Working with my brothers in the fraternity taught me what it means to collaborate. I learned how to guide a group without driving it, how to entertain ideas that are not my own and to utilize the skills and strengths of my brothers to serve the fraternities needs. In two short years we were both colonized and recognized as a fully chartered chapter of the Fraternity. The Eta Chapter has seen a great deal of success, and while I am the chief executive of the fraternity, I have learned that I am just a part of the team that made everything happen. I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have been, and to be currently, involved with such an outstanding group of eagle scouts, committed to service their community and their school.

Most Meaningful Experience Remarks: Outside of its value as exposure to the field of medicine, volunteering at the Community Care Center in Winston-Salem changed my perspective on what it means to be uninsured. The community care center sees uninsured patients, most of whom are working poor holding full time jobs and unable to make ends meet. As a pre-medicine student, my peers and I have spent plenty of time discussing the state of health care in our nation and the downfalls of our insurance system, but being in the clinic gave me a different view entirely of the options available to the uninsured. Additionally, I learned just how much of a difference a good provider can make in the lives of a patient, with or without insurance. XXXXXXXXX the CCCCC I worked with is the only full time provider at the free clinic and as a result she see\'s mostly return patients with chronic disorders: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the like. Even though most of the patients XXXX saw were manageable cases, she did an extraordinary job of inspiring them to take control of their disorders.
Serves as a member of the honors vanguard, a group of Honors students selected for their outstanding scholarship and service to The Honors College. Met with prospective students, introduced The Honors College at public events including open house and on Scholars Days, and helped host Program socials. The Vanguard members are invited to serve by the Director and are adjunct members of the Honors College staff.
As a member of Epsilon Tau Pi, I am registered as an Adult Volunteer with Troop 109 in Boone, NC. As a scout leader I attend weekly troop meetings and help the scouts work on merit badge and rank advancement requirements. More specifically I help mentor the newest scouts in the troop, teaching them the scout oath and law and helping them to achieve their first rank. I help teach first aid, wilderness survival and safety and personal management. As an Eagle Scout I also help scouts finish their final requirements for the rank of Eagle, specifically the required service project.
As the Communications director I was responsible for managing and updating the chapter website, writing the quarterly chapter newsletters, and handling all of the chapter press releases and government contact including informing and inviting state and national senators and representatives the mayor and the governor to chapter events. The communication director is also a voting member of the chapter executive board. The Yadkin river chapter includes eleven congregations in Forsyth, Surry and Stokes county, NC.
As part of the Appalachian State IMPULSE review team, the applicant was responsible for providing timely reviews of the manuscripts submitted to the journal and attending monthly team meetings. All future Reviewers at Appalachian State are required to take HON 3530, a class that focuses on the publication process in modern research and prepares students to become Reviewers for IMPULSE. Great first interview! What an outstanding program. The current third years at Brody outscored the third years at DUKE on step 1! Seems like a great community with alot of support, academic and otherwise.
Apparently I was screened in for a secondary on 7/21 but the primary receipt email and the secondary email never made it to my inbox. Called admissions on 8/25 to ask why I hadn\'t received a primary application acknowledgment and figured all of this out. Submitted the same day.
Im really bummed about this waitlist. I felt like I really clicked with my Interviewers and the students I met. Oh well, heres to hoping for some good news.
I feel really great about this interview. Better than I have about any of the others. I really jived with Wake, much more than I thought I would. And with two of the three interviewers, it was fantastic! Heres to an acceptance come 1/11/12!!
