Summary of Application Experience
Turned in AMCAS primary a week after it opened.
Finished secondaries in june-august.
(Received secondaries from all 17 except Washington and Indiana.)
11/7: UMinnesota interview. first interview. went pretty well although some very odd questions (first question was: When did Rachmaninoff die?)
12/1: UWisconsin interview. A little more stressful interview.
12/3: UIowa interview. Still think this was my best interview so far. I'm in the final pool so won't find out until march.
12/15: UColorado interview. Worst interview so far. Well the faculty one went fine but the student one was pretty awful. It's okay though, I didn't like it as much as the midwest schools. It's really in the middle of nowhere, but nice new facilities.
1/9: Vanderbilt interview. Much nicer to just walk 5 minutes to my interview from my dorm instead of dealing with flights and hotels and all that. Interview went very well.
1/14: Put on waitlist at Wisconsin. I guess there's still a chance at getting in, but I'm just waiting for an acceptance from somewhere.
1/23: Medical College of Wisconsin interview. Went well and I was pleasantly surprised at the school. Stayed at home so that was nice.
1/26: Told I'd be in the final pool for University of Iowa. They sure have a weird process. But I guess for me it just means waiting another 2 months to hear something.
1/28: I just added this whole MDApplicants profile. Before the days went fast when I had no idea when notices would come. But knowing MCW's decision letter is being mailed on Friday sure makes the days seem longer.
1/28: Rejected from UMinnesota. Pretty much expected it since they didn't call with an acceptance. And it took them almost 3 months to say anything. The school was great but it was my first interview and didn't do as well. Oh well, still hoping for the others to come through.
2/2: Waitlisted at MCW. Still waiting on that first acceptance. But gonna start looking for possible alternative options if I end up not getting into any med school.
4/13: At this point I have also received rejections from University of Colorado and been rejected off the waitlist at Wisconsin since I was not in top 20. I still have slight hope that MCW will come through and will probably know my fate for there and Vandy by May 15th. In the meantime I'm finding a job and figuring out the process for reapplying if necessary.
I think one of my main problems was applying to too many state schools that take in a required number of people from their state. Also, I had mostly top schools and should have added some that are middle/low-tier, I just didn't know of any until now.
7/1/09: I turned in AMCAS in first week and had some secondary essays ready. However, it turns out that today the Medical College of Wisconsin offered me delayed matriculation if I am not invited off the waitlist this year. The catch is I can apply to any other schools but would have 100% guarantee to go there. I will most likely accept this offer since I loved the school, and won't have to fill out any more applications haha. Never thought it was going to happen by the time end of June hit, but luckily it did. Good luck to all you applying in the future. It has been one crazy ride but I'm glad the real part is going to start, even if I start a year after my peers. At least I can spend a year making some money and hanging out with college friends and girlfriend before we move to different cities.
