Process can be very random. 1. Have great personal statement. 2. Have STRONG LORs (work hard, become good friends with whomever you work/research with). 3. Don't give up, show schools you're interested by calling/writing/e-mailing. I know, I did not have either #1 or #2 but I did do #3. Do all this to become the accepted exception rather than the rejected expectant.
