Summary of Application Experience
Received more interview invites than I expected so far - I am at 5 interviews for 17 apps, and expect at least two acceptances. I think it goes to show that volunteer experience and excellent LORs count for a lot. Re-taking the MCAT and bringing up my scores really helped as well (I found Examkrackers home study to be much much better than Kaplan's course). Most schools seemed very receptive to the non-traditional applicant and those students who have taken time off after college.
Advice for the process - 1) use StudentDoctor.net, 2) have a separate email address for the admission process and TURN OFF YOUR BULK MAIL/SPAM FILTER, 3) submit all relevant LORs (more than just the 2 science, 1 non-science, etc) if applicable include work and volunteer LORs REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOUR PRE-MED CMTE TELLS YOU (however do pay attention to the schools' requirement and when in doubt call and ask if you can submit more), 4) call the schools every two weeks to check on your application status and check status pages (many schools lost things, etc), 5) write handwritten thank you notes after interviews, 6) Apply to a WIDE-RANGE of schools.
