My experiences with the process has been positive overall. I know my record is not the best, but my strategy was to apply VERY early and to only schools that I thought would give me a change. So far it seems to be working--I got two interviews before September!
I think the biggest thing I have working for me is my ability to communicate in written and oral form why I am motivated to be a doctor, despite my less than stellar acadmemic record. When I fill out my secondaries I make sure to write at every opportunity about my experiences and how they have motivated me to pursue medicine, but not in a scripted or fake type of way. I think the Adcoms are moved by genuine, honest people, and will consider someone like me because of it.
5/15/09: Its a wrap--going to University of Louisville!
