APPLY EARLY!!!
Took the Kaplan class feb-apr and kept pushing back my MCAT until July. It went horrible so i voided it. I felt totally dejected after that but as Big Black would say 'DO WORK SON!!' so i went back to the books and took the mcat in august and got a 31Q... it was higher than any of my practice exams so i was pretty happy. submitted my amcas a bit later. I honestly applied everywhere that had a recognized name in the midwest and east coast. I didn't know anything about the schools! I just wanted to go to Med School this year!
now i had to find rec letters! hadn't really ever talked to profs during my undergrad so I sent emails to all science classes i got A+ in. Some of the teachers i had to heckle a bit to get shit done. They probably weren't the greatest but i was running out of time for app. I got some really good letters from the doctors i had shadowed as well.
Ok rec letters are in so the next step was my pre-med committee interview in mid October. It went pretty bad, they asked me who the governor of Missouri was and I had no clue until they gave it to me multiple choice format. All the other questions were pretty easy like stem cell research, my EC's, etc...
so now it was late october and the committee send out all my stuff. I got lots of secondaries but i guess they were just interested in money and nothing else.
In order of interview invites it was:
1) kirksville
2) mizzou
3) midwestern
4) des moines
5) St. Louis
I wasn't thrilled about DO even though my dad, who is an MD, kept pushing me towards it. My problem was that 2 of my cousins had applied MD and didn't get in that cycle and thus chose DO. Makes it look like a school for people that can't cut the MD requirements. Even a girl at KCUMB said 'its an ok school, but you can make to MD with ur stats'.
Mizzou was the first interview and it went really really well. I even knew one of the interviewers. I thought i for sure got in so i was heartbroken when i got waitlisted. But mizzou has lots of waitlist movement so we will see where it goes in March.
KCOM: very nice people and they even let us in the anatomy lab during a dissection. Best interview i had. Too bad the average age is 26 and 50% are married. These folks were WAY TOO OLD. not to mention the city sucks.
KCUMB: better than KCOM. School had good facilities and some cute gals. My interviewer was a microbiology professor (micro is my favorite thing) so I naturally sucked up to her big time. talking about the discovery of H. Pylori. It only lasted 15 minutes unlike 2 hours at mizzou. Not too impressed with the calibur of the students when a first year asked me 'Is Arnold Schwarzenegger from austria or australia?'
SLU: OK my last chance at getting an MD acceptance!! I stayed with a friend who is a first year there for the night. LOL we still joke about how he made me take a binder to the interview 'what?! they didn't tell you take a binder at ur committee interview?! take mine dude it makes u look all professional and shit.' I wore my nice mens express outfit with a indigo blue shirt, and white/silver tie. It was tight looking.
anyway the interview went really good and the other guy just kept talking and talking and i just put my two cents in there. When he said 'I'm surprised mizzou didn't outright accept you' I kinda just smiled cuz i knew this was good news.
two weeks later.... iPhone beeps at me and the header reads 'SLU acceptance' WOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I have no idea how the hell i got in (maybe the almighty binder really did help?)
I cancelled on all the D.O. schools a minute later.
Now all thats left is seeing what Mizzou thinks of me. They rank people on the waitlist 1-96 and last year they took 60 off the waitlist. So my odds are pretty good i guess. They should release that info to me in March and ill see where i stand.
