  • Application cycles: 2008
  • Demographics: Female, Caucasian
  • Home state: Michigan
  • Brief Profile: Spartan Marching Band - plan on 4 years, hopefully squad leader senior year
Spartan Brass (pep band) - also plan on 4 years
Volunteering at local hospital this summer (will continue this from here on out)
Looking into doing research for Fall 2007-Spring 2008 semesters
Will definitely do research/senior thesis in psychology Fall 2008-Spring 2009
    Honors College
Dean's List all semesters except 1st

Activities I plan/hope to get involved in next fall:

The Listening Ear - suicide hotline (wanted to this year but came down with bronchitis during required orientation sessions)
FAAN (Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis) Teen Advisory Group - I've had a severe milk allergy since birth
TA for a psychology course Spring 2008
Teach or Tutor ACT/SAT for Kaplan

I realize that I'm starting this waaaay early, but I figure it'll help me to keep things organized and get a head start on everything.

I'm planning on taking the MCAT in either April or May 2008 after (or toward the end of, if I go with April) taking two science-intensive semesters. I just recently became pre-med, so the only science I've done is gen chem (got transfer credit from dual enrollment during high school) and I'm taking intro to physics I this summer. For Fall 2007 I'll be taking both introductory bio courses and their corresponding labs, organic chem I, human physio I, and marching band (16 credits); for Spring 2008 I'll be taking physics II along with the physics I lab, organic chem II, biochem I, and honors intro to psychology (after taking 5 other psych classes, I'm finally going to get around to taking it!), and Spartan Brass (15 credits). Also, about the GPA: I ended up with a 2.77 GPA at the end of my first semester. I sort of had trouble adjusting to the new college thing my first semester, and it didn't help that I had to deal with an incredibly time-consuming and demanding EC (marching band) along with a 16-credit courseload and early morning classes. Plus I kind of went in thinking 'oh cool I think I'll try to overachieve' and signed up for all these upper-level courses which was really pretentious of me and totally backfired, because I just couldn't handle all the work (all my classes required attendance, participation, massive amounts of reading, and writing multiple papers...I didn't take a single multiple choice exam until my second semester). Anyway, I've obviously brought my average up quite a bit in the two semesters since then, and at the end of the current semester I'm anticipating ~3.6. If you take my first semester out of the picture I've got about a 3.85, and if you get rid of my entire freshman year I've got a 3.99...so there's definitely an upward trend. As for the MCAT - I tend to test well (and of course I'm going to study like crazy, anyway), but I don't want to be unrealistic...so I'm setting 'goal' of 40+ (which I realize is probably too high and is precisely why I'm setting that goal) and hoping to end up with a 35+. As it gets closer to the test I'm sure I'll have a much better idea of where I can expect to be at, but for now that's just where I'd ideally like to be and am currently working at being. Any comments are completely welcome and appreciated.
