  • Brief Profile: (I\'m editing my activities a bit to be more clear because the way I wrote it makes it look like I didn\'t do much)

I spent the majority of my time during undergraduate working to support myself. This took up 20-30 hrs/wk during the school year and 30-50 in the summer (depending on the wk). First year I worked as a cashier in a cafe, then I worked as a tutor at a middle school for 2 years, then I worked as an office assistant for two years (and was a student supervisor for one of those years). I spent a lot of time doing a very few things which gave me a lot of continuity, which I think is important. Not only did it give me lots of room to grow in a given setting (therefore showing med schools how much I can grow) it also let me know my bosses really well, leading to absolutely awesome letters of recommendation. I also worked as a nanny/babysitter for my last 3 years of undergrad.
I also volunteered in a free clinic 5-10 hours a week for all four years of undergraduate, again, continuity is key. The doctors I worked with knew me very well and wrote very good LORs. Plus because I was there so long I got to do a lot of things as a medical assistant and really got a chance to know for sure if medicine was for me because I was so close to the action for so long.
Volunteered in a public health program working with populations at risk for infectious diseases (primarily drug users and prostitutes)

I did NOT do any research, I have no interest in research and had no intention of doing something I disliked just to get into medical school.
EDIT: I do not like the scientific research that is available to undergrads - I could probably enjoy clinical research because it has direct patient contact.
