Brief Profile:
Did most of the first two years at community college. Won an award in statistics. Graduated with BA in Economics. Worked avg of 30-35 hours/wk throughout college in the lowly retail industry, first as a cashier (12x Fastest Checker of Month, nominated for District Cashier of the Year, 2x Cashier of the Month), and then as Customer Service Manager (3x Manager of the Month).
Volunteered once a week at a free clinic for about 8 months (at time of app). Stocked pharmacy, checked patients in, took BP, blood sugar, medical history, temp, etc...basically prepared them for examination. Shadowed doctors and 1st/2nd year medical students there as well. Great experience.
Volunteered at Humane Society for 10 months (at time of app), both at the facility, and by fostering sick cats at home that were scheduled for euthanasia. Also worked there for about six months.
I didn't do any research. Was told by one interviewer that this was a slight drawback. Had to go back to school and take the science prereqs. Made a D in Orgo I, but retook it and made an A. It never came up in the interviews. I was told by one of the Health Professions Advisors at my school that the rec from my neuro prof was very good.
