Summary of Application Experience
Key: R = Received S = Submitted C = Application Complete I = Interview A = Accepted W = Withdraw
05-30-07: Opened MDapplicants profile. Currently working on the first draft of my personal statement, but the rest of the AMCAS is set to go.
07-02-07: After a hectic month consumed by personal statement revisions, finally submitted the AMCAS. Admittedly, 24 schools is a bit of an overkill, but seeing as how I have no idea where I'll want to go one year from now... figured it'd be good to keep my options open. (We'll see if I still think it's a good idea when I have to submit all those secondaries...) Nonetheless, pumped to have this process underway. Best of luck to everyone else, as well!
07-16-07: AMCAS officially processed! Time to hit those secondaries hard.
08-11-07: Just finished Northwestern, which puts me about halfway through secondaries. Just waiting on two work LORs, and I should be able to start seeing some completed apps. Time to keep chuggin' along...
08-23-07: After some incessant nagging and prodding, my LORs are all in. Just sent out the mailing yesterday for my undergraduate school to ship out the LOR packets. I feel so close to being finished, but I've got some long secondaries left (i.e., Duke, Loyola). Still, morale is (relatively) high!
09-04-07: My first completed application (at George Washington)! Woo!
09-06-07: First interview invite (at Iowa)! My best friend goes here and loves it, so I'm very excited. Hopefully the first of more to come...
09-08-07: Y'know, there's nothin' like finishing the Duke secondary that makes you feel like you've accomplished something in your life... *leans back in chair*
09-15-07: Interview invite to Pittsburgh! Would love to go there.
09-19-97: 'Down goes Pritzker!' First rejection to University of Chicago, one of my top choices.
09-20-07: We've hit a rough stretch--Mayo burnt the midnight oil and sent a rejection at 2:35 AM.
09-22-07: Due to a couple factors (i.e., love NY; doing standard pre-med-second-guessing-of-application after Pritzker-Mayo rejections), I've decided to add New York Medical College. My friends here had good things to say about the school--wish I had acted on it earlier.
09-24-07: An interview invite to SUNY Downstate, my (as of last week) former place of employment. Excited to be able to see the school from a student's perspective, and catch up with some of my ex co-workers! Coincidentally, I've been working on the secondary to my current place of employment, Columbia University.
09-28-07: On hold at George Washington. I'm reading now that it eventually becomes a rejection for most.
10-03-07: Had my Iowa interview two days ago--really can't say enough about the school: beautiful facilities, enthusiastic students/faculty, comprehensive curriculum. Most importantly, they seemed very receptive to the needs of the student body. Today, I received an interview invite to another school that I was drawn to for their attention to students, Wake Forest.
11-17-07: Lots to catch up on, folks. Chronologically speaking: had a great interview at Downstate. The students were all genuinely very enthusiastic about the school, and you can't beat the clinical experience (and an astounding 100% pass rate on the Step 1s last year). After a heavy invite-drought in my gmail inbox, I received an interview to Rosalind Franklin on November 7. I'd love to be near Chicago, and I've heard from a few people that their program is on the up-and-up. I had my Wake Forest interview on November 12, and was very impressed with their concern for the student body, and a gorgeous anatomy lab. Received a quasi-acceptance e-mail from Iowa yesterday regarding logging into their Student Services website, but no official acceptance package quite yet. Finally, was unrejected/invited to interview at Duke today. I love their flexible third year, and am looking forward to heading back down to North Carolina! And really looking forward to my Pittsburgh interview this Monday. *catches breath* That should just about catch you up. Oh, and if you care about and enjoy film - even just an iota - go watch 'No Country for Old Men.' That is all.
11-19-07: Just got back home from UPitt. Loved it there - the school, the curriculum, the locale - and crossing my fingers for this one. And my quasi-acceptance at Iowa became an official one : I will be a doctor.
12-02-07: Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We just had our first snowfall of autumn this year here, and I am really looking forward to my first Christmas in New York City. Anyways, back to what we're all here for: I was stunned to receive a 'hold for spring consideration' from SUNY Downstate, after what I still consider to be my best interview thus far. Prime example of the unpredictable nature of this process. I received an invitation to interview back at my alma mater/hometown of the University of Minnesota on November 26. One of my top choices--great school, great location, and I would love to have the option to be back home for med school to be with my childhood friends and family. After some contemplation, decided to withdraw my interview/application from Rosalind Franklin after my Iowa acceptance. Keeping fingers crossed for my next two interviews!
12-07-07: Waitlisted at Wake Forest. They told us at the interview that a relatively high number of interviewees are placed in the alternate list, but I think I've still got a bit of a waitlist-hangover from Downstate. A good friend is coming in from DC for the weekend--that'll dull the ego-blow!
12-10-07: I present to you, dear reader, a George Washington University Unabridged Dictionary: pre in??ter??view hold (noun); 1. rejection. In conjunction with a Georgetown rejection, I can only conclude this: I have somehow angered the DC gods.
12-19-07: Had a uniquely impressive interview day at the University of Minnesota--absolutely loved it there. No other way to put it than that.
12-27-07: One of my top choices - Mount Sinai - full of eggnog and holiday cheer, decides to deliver a bowtied e-mail to my inbox. Inside? An interview invite! (I'm milking my one week window to use lame holiday references.) Hope everyone had a safe and productive holiday season!
