I'm a 25 year old in NY with a psych degree, thinking about med school for psychiatry. You have really inspired me - whether I decide to go into medicine or not. Your perseverance is incredible. Congrats on all your success!!

Encouraged
Melanie, 6/17/2009 at 4:14am EST
I have only read a couple of your posts, but I was so happy to see that you have succeeded in spite of your low gpa. I am fighting the uphill battle with my gpa right now. Also, I am almost 30 and recently told a male coworker I want to go to med school. The first thing he did was start calculating my age when I will be able to 'pop one out', which he estimated to be about 37. Not fair! If any guy my age was applying, this wouldn't even come up. I know there are risks to having children later, but there is also a risk when you raise your children to be 'whatever they can be', when you haven't become everything you can be. I want to look my children in the eye and tell them they can do ANYTHING they want, and smile, knowing I did too. I thought about just doing the nursing or PA route, but I will not go out without a fight and you are my biggest encouragement so far! Thanks and good luck in school!

It was big.
User #10303, 6/12/2009 at 6:03pm EST
(How big was it?) Like, vast tracks of land big. Like the size of Jupiter... but bigger. Like so big that they have to haul it up to my house in a supersized Hummer limo. It was HUGE. (This answer brought to you by the WTF Foundation, Random Q & A Division. :D ).

we're almost the same age and our mcat breakdown is identical ('cept for the apparently-irrelevant writing section). my gpa is not stellar, either. I have an unusual background (well, for med school applicants, anyway). I hope I can tell a similar success story next year! best of luck to you with all the upcoming good and big changes in your life. I know you will continue to do important things!

This is so wonderful to read! You got accepted at Wisconsin! I don't have anything inspiring to say other than that you are a great example for me to continue on with my pre-med (despite the insecurities I feel most of the time). God bless you.

Congratulations!! Was this your first time applying to medical school, or have you applied before? Did you take any classes after college to help boost your GPA?

This is inspiring and wonderful. I'm a nontrad, but a year out from my application cycle beginning. Your story is so motivating. If you have an opportunity during the med school years to write about being a mother during the application process and beyond, it would be wonderful to hear about it. In the meantime, many congratulations on the acceptances and the scholarship.

Wow! I left you a good luck comment here on 7/29 and love to check on your progress. As a mom who lives in MN, I feel like the schools around me don't accept older students (oldest at U of MN accepted was like 33). Your journey and accomplishments are encouraging! Congratulations!

Did you appeal UCLA/Drew's decision, too? Perhaps it's not too late! :) UCSF is known for responding positively to pre-secondary appeals, but maybe UCLA/Drew is, too! Good luck, and congrats on the ACCEPTANCE!!!

good luck with wisconsin. I have a cousin who lives out there and he's at UWisconsin for medical school. Just started as an MS 1 this year. There are also a couple of students in the 3rd and 4th year classes ThePRowler and Asher09 who post in the allo forums that seem to like it out there a lot from what I gather from posts. If you don't get in this year my advice is to do an SMP like Gtown's and retake the MCAT and shoot to maintain your VR and BS scores but raising your PS by 3- points if possible. Good luck. Hopefully you won't have to do those things.

Good for you for appealing to UCSF!! I interviewed at the JMP several weeks ago and it is also my first choice (although I did not apply to PRIME). I am also a non-traditional candidate (although not nearly so much as you) and, frankly, I would be honored to have someone with your life experience as a medical school peer. Congrats on the interviews you've gotten so far and hopefully UCSF will come around on this one!

congrats on your interviews so far. I think you have a great story and, although your gpa isn't that hot (neither is mine lol) you still have a shot. If you've gotten an interview that means you're smart enough for a school, now you just have to show them the rest of the package. I'm sure you'll do fine. Don't let the haters like that anonymous 'go be a mom' guy even affect you. I've had a few trolls on my mdapps saying the only reason I got in with my grades is b/c of affirmative action. We just live in a world where people go out of their way to try and ruin someone else's moment. It's hard for me to believe that there are premeds out there that can't just let someone chase a dream. Oh well. Good luck and I hope you get in to your top choice!

whoever made the comment about some haters being 'too young/too neurotic' is dead on. i wish nothing but the best for you, i'm sure you'll make it. you seem like a pretty cool person. we need more people like you becoming doctors, not the usual soulless number clone douchebags who couldn't interact comfortably with another human being if their lives depended on it. really good luck to you

You have a very interesting background. For schools that do not do a number screening, you should have a chance for interviews. I am also a nontraditional applicant with a husband and a son, and I already got an acceptance (I am 31). So there is hope! Just make sure if you do get an interview, let your interviewers see how wonderful you are, and how you are going to contribute to their community. I wish you the best of luck!
