SC: 7/8/2011; R: 9/12/2011. I narcissistically think this had partly to do with the fact that I provided no extra secondary information about why I really wanted to go here. Don't rush the secondaries, kids. All the schools want you to make them feel special

This was one of the programs I was most excited about by far. Coming in I was thinking first choice. I have a lot of research experience and actually heavily considered an MD/PhD. This program seemed like a great alternative. Not going to lie, it\'s nice that it\'s free too. Probably my favorite thing about it is the size and that it seems like you can tailor your medical school experience yourself. I love working in small groups, and critical thinking is my bag soo was really excited to see what CCLCM had to offer. Interview day was great, three interviews, One student and two faculty. They all went well (or so I believe). Actually the second faculty interview kept asking me about why I was second and not first author on a paper, which was a sore spot, so I might have seemed a bit bitter (basically my PI said it wouldn\'t be appropriate for an undergrad to head the paper up, so he made me \"co-first\" with the masters student who hadn\'t really done anything on the project, and put my name second even though it alphabetically came first. Anyway I\'m over that drama, obviously ;)) Hopefully I showed how mature and grounded I really am....
The program\'s amaaazing. Only a bit hesitant about the portfolio aspect, but just because it\'s such a big change, not that it\'s bad. It seems like something that is more applicable to the real world, anyway, so it\'s probably better to practise early.

Ahh Columbia. my dream school for undegrad. Honestly didn't know too much about the program coming in, but I do love manhattan, although 168th is approaching the edge. P/F first two years, honestly seems laid back in comparison to some of the other schools, which much much more focus being places on ECs. The number/activity of clubs is boggling. Get the feeling that Dean Nicholas is the god of admissions, much more than any other school I visited. Knew quite a bit about us, and talked about our experiences in a little pow wow before interviews. My interviewer was quite cool, and the interview itself was conversational. What I don't get is how any meaningful information is gained from these things. They seem just to be pleasant conversations to me, but I guess I don't have the mind of an adcom. Anyway the campus is tres cool and the hospital attaches conveniently to the school. Only thing that kind of worries me is the number of schools in the NYC area, I would rather not have to fight for placements.
I love the city, and the program seemed great. Lots of extracurriculars and interesting people. Living in a dorm for another year is the only negative I can actually think of.

I was never really sure about Case Western and honestly, probably would not have applied to it had I not applied to CCLCM. The interview group was huge, by far the biggest I've ever been in. Maybe 25 people? Anyway I had two interviews, a student and a faculty. My faculty interview was horrendous. I stress this. Horrendous. He quite obviously disliked me from the moment I shook his hand. He just really disliked my overall application, and thought I should have applied MD/PhD, and thought I was full of B.S. That's the way it goes sometimes, and I did try to be pleasant for most of it. This contrasts spectacularly with my student interview, which was amazing. The guy who interviewed me was really cool, and we had probably the best discussion of all my interviews to date. I actually really liked all of the Case students overall. The hospitals are great, and rainbow babies reminds me a lot of Vandy's children's hospital. Also happened to make a friend there who was moving to Berlin on the same day as me. If nothing else, very grateful for that :)

Summary of Application Experience
Hurry up and wait
All right so I submitted my application super early, and then tried to get in my secondaries ASAP as I knew I was leaving the country on October 2nd, and wanted to get in most if not all of my interviews before that. Had I been able to take more time on the secondaries, I would have expended a lot more effort looking at the school's aims and tailoring my response to that. The last thing you want to do is be generic, is what I've learned.
