  • Brief Profile: Applied June 2012. Matriculated July 2013.

Undergrad: Major in Biochemistry with a minor in Business. Graduated December 2012 with Academic Distinction (Top 20%).

    Generally upward GPA trend.

MCAT: It was higher than expected, but not unreasonably. I took it at the end of sophomore year, but should have waited until January of my Junior year once I had some Biochem and Physio.

    LORS: 2 science, 1 non-science, 1 research, 1 work

CYCLE: I applied to 15 schools, of which >1/3 offered me an interview. I did turn down one interview, which I would not recommend. Post interview I was either wait listed or accepted, but not rejected. I ended up with multiple acceptances, but Loyola was my favorite.

    ADVICE:

    1. START MEDICAL VOLUNTEERING/SHADOWING EARLY!!!!! Lacking these ECs can kill your chances at many schools.
    2. Take a year off. Delaying your application by a year to boost your GPA and medical ECs can be highly beneficial.
    3. Take the MCAT in advance (not a week before you apply!) to allow yourself ample time to retake if necessary.
    4. Submit when AMCAS opens. You don't need your finalized school list, LORs, or MCAT scores to submit. Those can all be added in throughout the cycle. I believe you only need 1 school on your list to submit. Choose a school you KNOW you'll apply to no matter what, submit with only them listed, and finalize the rest of your school list during the processing period.
    5. Avoid OOS public schools. Public schools have governmental requirements to matriculate anywhere from 60% to >90% IS students. No matter how strong your ties are, if you're not a resident you cannot fulfill this requirement. Also, realize that OOS stats are typically 1SD higher than the GPA/MCAT averages at that school.
    6. Do NOT apply to any schools you wouldn't attend! It's a wasted of your money and their time. I would have been (and was) elated to attend any of the schools I applied to, and so should you.
    7. (following #6) Read every school's mission statements, goals, etc. before deciding to apply to them. These will tell you what schools are the best fit for you and vice versa.
    8. No matter where you get in, BE HAPPY! YOU'RE GOING TO BE A DOCTOR! This is honestly a childhood dream for millions of people, and you've just achieved it!
