  • Demographics: Male, 34, Caucasian
  • Home state: Virginia

  • Brief Profile: Virginia resident applying in the 2012-2013 cycle.

    Major: BS Chemistry, conc. Biochemistry
cGPA: 3.58 (will be approx. 3.62 by the time I apply- this is an easy semester)
    sGPA: 3.51
MCAT: scheduled in May (AAMC Practice FL\'s: 33, 34)

    Extracurriculars:
    - Volunteer Firefighter/EMT-I with the local Fire Department (12-24 hrs. per week for about 2.5 years so far): ALS provider with lots and lots of clinical experience in the field and in the ED. I\'ve also had some leadership roles as a BLS preceptor and as a Firefighter recruit instructor. I usually ride as an ALS engine medic, but also work on a BUSY medic unit a few times a month. I plan on volunteering in the fire service until I\'m forced to retire! Love my job.

    - Research Assistant (16 hrs. a week for about 4 semesters so far): Working on my first ACS journal publication with my primary PI. I should be on as a second author. I\'ve been getting research credit through my degree program, so it works with my schedule. Recently took the lead on a grant proposal project with a secondary PI that works closely with my lab- we should find out more in a few weeks. If we get it, I\'ll be set up nicely for a primary author paper sometime next spring. I\'ve presented posters at a bunch of school conferences, but no publications just yet.

    - Resident Advisor (on my 3rd semester): RA for freshmen boys- it\'s been a crazy experience... I\'ve developed some really helpful leadership strategies, and have learned how to manage a budget pretty well. I go to a few leadership conferences every semester, and work with a pretty diverse group of people in the Housing Department at my university. Definitely a great opportunity for personal growth- it\'s caused me to challenge a lot of my beliefs. I\'m also the RA rep on my university\'s Health and Safety Committee, working with my buddies in fire/ems to help streamline our emergency response. It\'s a pretty neat overlap.

    - Physician Shadowing (100+ hrs.): I\'ve shadowed in a ton of specialties... EM, Peds, IM, family medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, OB/GYN, sleep medicine (funny story), rads, and a few others. I\'ve been shadowing a family practitioner consistently for about 2 years, and he\'s been a great mentor. Very interested in primary care and EM. We\'ll see how the clerkships go, though.

    Letters:
    - Very strong letter from my primary PI (biochemistry professor, department of chemistry graduate coordinator)
    - Strong letter from a secondary PI (molecular biology professor, will be working on an independent project for her this summer/ fall semester)
    - Good letter from an economics professor (pretty well respected in his field, has published a few successful books)
    - Very strong letter from a family practitioner (shadowed for 2 years, SUNY Upstate grad)

My top choice would be VCU. I\'ve visited the main campus a few times, and absolutely love the school and the city. I\'d be very happy to get in at any one of these schools, allopathic or osteopathic (I\'ll go wherever I\'m accepted).
