Summary of Application Experience
I was nervous about my MCAT scores and the fact that I'd be entering medical school as a physical therapist. As a result, I applied to 31 primaries and 22 secondaries. I received 13 interviews (thus far), 8 rejections, 4 acceptances and 1 waitlist. I also withdrew from a ton of interviews because of location, travel expenses and the fact that GW is a PERFECT school for me. For all those clinicians out there, it turns out being a PT is a major strength when I visited all med schools. They really value the strength of the skills of a PT. I didn't apply to many reach schools, though in retrospect, I should have. However, I considered GW a reach and I got in. Most importantly, I should say this: I know about 20 people who applied before the beginning of the school year in September. All have been accepted to at least one medical school before the December vacation and only one of them broke 30 on the MCAT. Apply early or be nervous for a long time. Yes my summer was ruined because I worked endlessly on the AMCAS essay and secondaries. But it was very worthwhile. On the interviews, have fun... go to it a day before to check out the school in more detail as well as where you'll potentially live for four years. Stay with a host because that makes all the difference... usually someone who is eager about the school will pump you up for the interview and you'll end up having a great experience and leaving with a good flavor of the school. It will be worth the time if it is a school you are serious about. ----------------------------------------------------------- Here's a little update now that I've been at GW for 3/4 of 1st year. I really do love it here. The people (students, classmates, faculy and administration) are great. There are tons of opportunities and the school is very NON-competitive. Everyone is out to make sure that everyone else understands the material. I don't think I would've found a more supportive environment at another school.
